A multi-site surveillance design should make investigations consistent while preserving each property’s operating requirements. For NEPA organizations with offices, yards, warehouses or detached buildings, begin by listing the events and evidence needed at each location. Do not assume that identical camera models, retention periods or administrator rights are appropriate everywhere.
Map the recording and network dependencies
Draw where each camera records, where operators sign in and which connections are needed for playback. Document internet capacity and any wireless or fiber links between buildings. Check what happens when one site loses connectivity: recording, health alerts, local access and later recovery may behave differently. A central dashboard should not conceal an isolated recorder or a failed upload queue. Test restoration while ordinary traffic is present, because backfill can compete with live viewing and business applications.
Standardize names, roles and incident handling
Use consistent camera names, site identifiers, time synchronization and export records. Give local staff access only to the views and actions required for their role. Define who can review several sites, preserve an incident and disclose evidence. Include offboarding and emergency coverage. Multi-state or multi-tenant operations should retain separate privacy and retention decisions even when they share a technical platform.
Test a cross-site investigation
Ask an authorized operator to locate an event, follow it through the relevant views and preserve synchronized exports. Repeat a defined portion of the workflow during a controlled connectivity interruption. Record the observed limitations, support owner and remedy. Maintain an inventory of versions and licenses so an upgrade at one site does not silently break an integration elsewhere.
